The Origin of the MR. ROBOT fsociety Mask is Cheesy Horror Goodness

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for USA’s Mr. Robot. Proceed with caution.

When you think of Mr. Robot, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the mask that Elliot and the rest of the fsociety hackers don to do their dirty work. Up until last night’s episode, we assumed the Monopoly Man-style mask was a reference to corporate greed, and left it at that. It turns out it’s actually from a film Darlene and Elliot used to watch when they were younger called The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie. We saw snippets of the VHS-style footage during the latest episode, but were dying to see more. Luckily, USA released the whole thing, which you check out right here.

Mr Robot Massacre Siblings

In the mysterious clip we see a pair of wealthy siblings (pictured above) with a dynamic that’s even weirder than the one Elliot and Darlene have (if that’s even possible). While they’re waiting for their friends to arrive to their party, the duo sniff cocaine and nonchalantly discuss their Uncle Conrad’s suicide–referring to it as a “total pansy move.” Ouch. As soon as the brother leaves his sis sitting at the table alone, a masked man comes out and all hell (and her blood) breaks loose. When the brother emerged from the house and sat back down, he saw the same fate and had his skull bashed in (cheesy ’80’s effects, and all).

Considering USA released the full clip, we can’t help but wonder how deeply it’s tied to Elliot’s motives. At the beginning of last night’s episode, we saw Elliot put on the mask, and scare Darlene, just as the brother in the video had. Another thing they share is a dead relative. The moment the sister saw the masked murderer approach, she assumed it was her dead uncle. If it was, does that mean a character in Mr. Robot faked their death? Is it a hint that one or both siblings are going to die in the show, along with their friends? We have so many questions!

If anything, the title reflects Elliot and fsociety’s goal to carefully take down Evil Corp. We already know Elliot hatched the plan for the big hack after watching the film with his sister, so there’s clearly a tie. Then again, the video could mean nothing, or be a misdirect. I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
