In the not-too-distant past, a little show out of Minneapolis, MN, that went to basic cable and was favorable because it was two hours long, became one of the comedic hallmarks of a generation. Without Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s 10-seasons-and-a-movie worth of lovingly ripping apart old movies, a whole generation of people might not have otherwise found their sense of humor. I specifically would be a very different person if not for Joel, Mike, Crow, Tom, and the Mads. That’s why I was honored to host the interview for the new and updated MST3K on our Camp Conival stage.
I was joined by the creator of the series, Joel Hodgson, and the new players, Jonah Ray (host Jonah Heston), Felicia Day (new mad scientist Kinga Forrester), Hampton Yount (Crow T. Robot), and Baron Vaughn (Tom Servo), to talk all about how they went about bringing the show back from cancellation for fans both new and old. Joel and Jonah discuss how they went about casting the new roles, and the whole team explained how they get through watching old movies and writing jokes if the movie is ungodly awful. No pain, no gain, right?
For anyone wondering, Joel explained that the new series will continue doing older and obscure genre movies, leaving out newer crappy flicks, so it’ll feel as much like the show we’ve grown to love as possible. And mere hours after our interview ended, it was announced that the new season will be available on Netflix, meaning it’ll be in practically everyone’s home in the whole world. A far cry from being relegated to the early days of Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel back when hardly anyone even had the channel.
The new episodes will begin filming soon, so the excitement continues to build! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
