The Music Geek Track of the Week: “How Can You Luv Me?”

Yo, Nerds, as a result of Becca’s and my constant desire to disseminate good music throughout the nerdosphere, we thought it might be a solid idea to start posting the songs that couldn’t escape one of our repeat cycles throughout the week. So from now on you can expect more new music at the end of every week to add to your running, reading, or day job-time-killing playlists.

For this inaugural post, I want everyone to check out “How Can You Luv Me?” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra. If D’Angelo ever got a chance to record with Tame Impala, I imagine that it might sound something like New Zealander Ruban Nielson’s new psychedelic outfit. “How Can You Luv Me” is funky math: the unfaltering, muffled drum loop, jaunty bassline, and taut guitar jabs are a perfect confluence of calculated timing and carefree jamming.  And with Nielson’s overwrought falsetto, the song never takes itself too seriously, providing a purely fun, replayable paean to solo dance parties.
