The Muppets Will Get a Reboot Series on Disney’s Streaming Service

Next year, Disney’s new streaming service will be looking to compete against Netflix by bringing some of its big franchises out to play. In addition to a Star Wars TV series and at least one Marvel show, Disney is reportedly using the opportunity to once again reboot Jim Henson‘s most beloved creations, the Muppets.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Muppets are getting a new series on the Disney streaming service, but it doesn’t have a premise or even a concrete take on the franchise yet. However, there is currently a search underway for a new screenwriter and The Muppets will likely be among several classic characters that will inhabit the still untitled streaming service.

One of the main complaints about the last Muppet reboot, the short-lived ABC mockumentary sitcom on which Kermit and the gang worked behind the scenes at Miss Piggy’s late night talk show, was that it was too cynical compared to the previous takes on the Muppets.

So how can the new Muppets series avoid the same fate? It was as recent as 2011’s The Muppets, starring and co-written by Jason Segel, that the franchise managed to recapture that old magical optimism. The movie had the right tone with some very catchy music by Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie. If the latest Muppets show can employ the same good spirits, that would be something that we’d love to see.

What do you want to see from The Muppets‘ latest reboot? It ain’t easy being green, so leave a comment below!
