THE MARTIAN Gets Mashed Up With WALL-E in Remixed Trailer

Some days you just have to ask the important questions. For example, what if Matt Damon was WALL-E?

Next month, Damon is starring in The Martian, the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. Damon is playing astronaut Mark Watney and the film follows his struggle to survive on Mars after he is left behind and presumed dead by the rest of his crew. But for the purposes of the new trailer remix above, Damon’s Mark Watney has become WHATN-E!

At first glance, The Martian has very little in common with WALL-E, Pixar’s animated classic that was released in 2008. The title character of WALL-E was a maintenance robot who exhibited signs of sentience and emotion that went far beyond mere programming. But YouTube user Tony D’s mash-up of The Martian and WALL-E creates a clear parallel between Watney’s drive to survive against all odds on the red planet and Wall-E’s “never give up” attitude. WALL-E never stops to consider that his continued existence on Earth was completely improbable. Nor should a robot be able to demonstrate love, free will, and an inventive spirit. And yet, that’s what WALL-E does. He achieves impossible things in part because he didn’t know that they were impossible!

In The Martian, Watney is all too aware of how slim his chances are…but much like WALL-E, he keeps going. He never stops. And maybe, just maybe, Watney will also achieve his goal in the end. Plus, it’s totally adorable to hear the dialogue from The Martian trailer edited to fit the footage from WALL-E.

The Martian arrives in theaters on Friday, October 2.
