Oh god, I hope there’s a “D— in a Box” movie on the way.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin and This if 40 director Judd Apatow is developing a movie with The Lonely Island guys, according to a piece in Variety this morning. Apatow would co-produce the project, whose details – including story – are under wraps for Universal Pictures.
The Lonely Island trio is Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, who’ve been active since 2001 making shorts and putting out comedy albums, but hit it big with their digital shorts on Saturday Night Live. Taccone has worked with Universal in the past to bring the Will Forte’s Saturday Night Live character MacGruber to the big screen in the absolutely excellent 2010 movie of the same name.
While I’m secretly sitting here hoping this is MacGruber 2 (it really isn’t), according to the article, Schaffer and Taccone would co-direct. But speaking of MacGruber, it seems unlikely that this is an adaptation of something from their Saturday Night Live shorts – if it was, we’d see Lorne Michaels’ name as part of the announcement, given his involvement as producer for all features which spin out of the show. The Variety piece notes that the project is based on a pitch the trio brought to Universal.
No word on Andy Samberg’s involvement, although hopefully his schedule will free up once Brooklyn 99 is back on the air.
In the meantime, Lonely Island has a deal with Fox to develop original television programming for the network’s digital platforms and for real, you guys, we all want to see MacGruber 2.
