THE LAST JEDI Will Be the Longest STAR WARS Movie Yet

If you’re like us and can’t wait to head back to the galaxy far, far away next month there’s good news: you’ll get to spend even more time there than you ever have before, because The Last Jedi will be the longest Star Wars movie yet.

Director Rian Johnson revealed the film’s full runtime–which includes the credits–during a press conference in France (and reported by IGN). It comes in at two hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes total), which makes it eight minutes longer than the previous record holder, the 142-minute long Attack of the Clones. (Turns out that movie didn’t just feel like it droned on forever, it really did.)

That’s 15 extra minutes of Star Wars goodness than The Force Awakens had, since that came in at two hours and fifteen minutes. Here’s how the length of the first two sequel trilogy movies compare to the first six episodes.

  • A New Hope: 121 minutes
  • The Empire Strikes Back: 124 minutes
  • Return of the Jedi: 131 minutes
  • The Phantom Menace: 133 minutes
  • Attack of the Clones: 142 minutes
  • Revenge of the Sith: 140 minutes

Rogue One‘s length falls in the middle at 133 minutes, coming in at two hours and 13 minutes.

So what does this mean? Will The Last Jedi be the most epic entry yet and that’s why it needs more time to fit in so much? Could the film take its time training Rey so we can also learn in greater detail what happened to send Luke into hiding? Or could it be the action sequences are even bigger and better than anything we’ve seen before?

Or could there just be 15 minutes of people petting porgs?

Unfortunately we won’t get those answers until next month. But at least after this long wait we’ll get to spend even more time in our favorite galaxy than we ever have before.

What do you make of this extra long runtime? Give us your best theories on what it means in the comments below.
