The Ladies Up for the CAPTAIN MARVEL Directing Gig are Impressive

With Brie Larson firmly in place as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Carol Danvers, and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve on the script, few pieces remain in the puzzle that is their forthcoming Captain Marvel movie. And today, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the pool of women in consideration for the coveted role of director has been cut down to a top three—and we’re pretty excited about the women up for the part.

Editor’s Note: Nerdist has reached out for further comment/confirmation from Marvel, but had yet to hear back at the time of publication.

Though THR posits that the role won’t be filled “any time soon” as Marvel considers its options, the three women that remain—Lesli Linka Glatter, Niki Caro, and Lorene Scafaria—come from another, slightly larger pool that included the likes of The Babadook‘s Jennifer Kent (which: holy cats what a movie that would’ve been!) and Kung Fu Panda 2‘s Jennifer Yuh.

If the purported finalists don’t ring any bells for you, well, they should, because theirs is an impressive lot. Perhaps most notable is the name Lesli Linka Glatter, who, in addition to her impressive work on shows like Homeland and The Leftovers, as well as Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Masters of Sex, Twin Peaks, and True Blood, was at one point the top choice to helm the Wonder Woman film over at DC. If anything, Glatter is perhaps most poised to make the leap from TV directorship to the cinemahouse. Name a prestige TV show, and she’s likely directed at least an episode of it, if not more (to say nothing of her directorship of the beloved movie Now and Then). Glatter’s deft hand and eye for cinematic detail in all her shots, big screen or small, make her, arguably, the perfect choice for the Danvers film.

Next on the list? Niki Caro, the writer/director of 2002’s Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Whale Rider. Caro’s other credits include North Country with Charlize Theron, the upcoming Jessica Chastain-starrer The Zookeeper’s Wife and McFarland USA. Given the first two films we mentioned are essentially about women surviving in male-dominated industries, Caro’s trajectory and source material history could make her the perfect fit.

And last but far from least, we have Lorene Scafaria who—like Taika Waititi before her—comes from a decidedly more indie space, with writing credits on films like Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (which she also directed), The Meddler, and the TV show Children’s Hospital. If you want to call her a wildcard, don’t, because Scafaria’s out-of-the-box approach is sort of Marvel catnip of late, and could imbue the story with a bit of quirk and fun.

And in case you need it, Dan’s breaking down everything you need to know about Captain Marvel:
