This week’s guest, the incredibly bright and hilarious Kathryn Borel (Corked: A Memoir) does not need another copy of the children’s book Eloise. Find out why, and while you’re at it, learn about the random anarchy of the universe, the unexpected ways we connect to other humans, and of course (of course??), French clowns.
The JV Club
Wow, this was one of the funniest episodes yet! Kathryn was so hilarious, insightful, and honest. She seemed really cool. Awesome guest! And of course Janet was charming and rad, as per usual!
Side note: I wanted to abbreviate “usual” in typical JV style, but have no idea how it would be spelled without just looking like “us”… As per youje? Kinda French-looking. Euge? Uncomfortably close to eugenics. Oh well, good thing no one has to transcribe these episodes!
Yay! She mentioned me! 🙂 And thanks for trying to get everyone we’ve been furiously requesting for!
Oops it’s Jian. 🙂
Janet!
Thanks so much for having a super intelligent, Canuck on the show. I think she is part of Q, the talk show with Gian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio. Have you ever listened? I think you’d love it. Gian is the voice I listen to when I need calm.
In terms flushing the idea out more as Mindezzy said. How about having past guests on and just doing an advice podcast. Maybe as a separate addendum to this podcast or part of the regular weekly jv club?
Gr8t interview. It was nice to hear about your bf. Also your guest was very interesting and the suggestion about the end was great. Maybe flush it out more and involve the fans somehow.
Is she really into Polyamory or was she just saying that? You didn’t do the Coottie Catcher. Has that been phased out?
Nerdist needs to update their spam protection…
Anyway. As a (non-American) lapsed Catholic, I prefer my Xmas music religious. Xmas songs about Santa and the holidays themselves just plain suck from their lack of basis on ancient/medieval tunes (and their American-ness, I don’t identify with those traditions, the Jesus stuff I recognize).
Anywho, Borel is a famous name in mathematics, as I mentioned on Twitter, Émile Borel is one of the founders of modern probability, and the guy who came up with the Infinite Monkey Theorem (on the lighter side of things). Would he happen to be Kathryn’s great-grand-father or great uncle by any chance?
I feel like there has been a lot of talk surrounding religion on the podcast recently and I’ve really been enjoying it. It’s not often that you can hear many different ideas about religion and have them all be presented respectfully and thoughtfully, and I think that it reflects on the quality of the guests on this podcast that this sort of discussion can be had so frequently without any judgement or disrespect. I also always appreciate talk of mental illness on the podcast, because I feel like Janet has such a good viewpoint on it. It was nice to hear that chemical imbalances can be part of a huge shift in early adulthood, and the idea that it doesn’t last forever, but it can last for years. I think people too often say that it gets better after high school, or with therapy, or with medicine, but I’ve found that not to always be true. The idea that, yes, it can last for years and it’s miserable but if you make it through those years, it won’t last forever is very reassuring.
On a totally unrelated note, I can’t believe I didn’t think of this when you talked about going to see Matilda, but it’s recently hit me that Lesli Margherita is totally JV Club guest material. Also, while I’m at it, I seem to remember Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black talking about how much she loves Burning Love and if she were on the podcast I might die with joy. I know neither of them are working in LA right now so it might not be plausible, but I thought it might be worth thinking about!
