Two very special guests join Janet for this episode: the amazing Starlee Kine (This American Life), and her amazing dog, Oh Papa. Richard Nixon! Child Stardom! Gravity spoilers! Seriously, don’t listen to this if you haven’t seen Gravity yet but you want to. Otherwise, treat your ears to one of the coolest writers around, New York-style.

I like what Starlee says about writing being excruciating – it’s true! It is very hard to sit down and make yourself to this solitary activity – and do it regularly. Having discipline in writing is a very hard thing – and something I’m still trying to obtain!
As far as writing a novel – I finished mine in my MFA program, and after a year of rejections from agents and small presses, I decided to self-publish and make things happen for myself!
I so love that you mentioned the Phil Collins This American Life! I love that episode so very much!
BTW – The best pad thai I’ve ever had is at Talesai on Sunset strip across from the 9000 building. 🙂
Your theory about it being Sandra Bullock specifically doesn’t entirely hold up, because Natalie Portman was originally cast, but dropped out because she got pregnant.
I think the Gravity analogy holds up.
Each obstacle Stone overcomes or crisis she adapts to reveals something even worse that’s been lurking in the background. Every physical reprieve means a fight to find the inner strength to brace against the next problem.
So good!!!!! Starlee and Oh Papa were great guests! Big fan of the memory bank idea, such a smart and sweet idea.
So much fun! I could listen to Janet and Starlee all day!
Somebody else already spoiled Gravity for me, doggone it, the same facts that are talked about here.
Another great JVClub!
Da*n! I haven’t seen Gravity, but I love Starlee Kine. Oh what to do, what to do!
lol
