I’m just now catching up with all my podcast listening, as I’ve been on vacation for two weeks (I do all my podcast listening on my drive to work). Oh how I missed the JV Club Podcast.
I have to admit to tearing up a bit at the mention of Emma’s brother. Oh what a terrible thing to have to go through at that age (or any age, really).

Janet: You mean Grave of the Fireflies or Ou to tori? (I’ll bet you even Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko haven’t watched the latter) Of course, you should watch both, but the second is hard to find in North America. Oh, to have the European DVD…
Yep it’s me. BTW, the “beach umbrella” that I almost forgot at your table was a replica of Michonne’s Sword from Walking Dead I had bought for a friend of mine. 🙂
Joseph! I hope you are the Joseph who gave me the AMAZING toot and scoot poster at Metrocon!! And what a wonderful note about the grief piece. I think you’re absolutely right and there’s more to be said on the topic- I’ll bring up this great comment on the podcast!
PJ- Sorry I missed you in Montreal, and I can’t wait to maybe subject myself to that film!
I could be completely wrong but these were my thoughts…
You have established in a few episodes that you are one to want to get through the tough times quickly. For example you would rather have people “just be mad at you and get it over with” . The “bloom” of grief you are already feeling in your heart for the impending loss of certain loved ones possibly has to do with how much of a strain that sort of anticipation has on you. You can not keep these people/pets around forever, nor would you dare wish for the loss sooner. So you are forced to sit in triage, which is where you hate to be because it’s the ultimate loss of control. This feeling of “whats coming” just sits inside you, popping up to remind you over and over that it is on the horizon.
If any of that is actually on point, I’d say if you can’t control life attempt to control your perspective. Instead focusing on the end and being sad, perhaps you could focus on the beginnings. Celebrate the things you love about them while they are here, celebrate the things they have done, or are doing. So that when the day comes that you have to part ways, you know that you did your best to let them know they were appreciated, that they were loved and that they had a place of significance in this world.
I should say I’m also glad you took my advice and finally went to Montreal (right after I was in town)… Of course, I always find out after the fact. Tig Notaro and Maria Bamford are/were there this week for Just for Laughs, and again I’m not going ’til next week.
Since we’re talking about grief and death, a perfect excuse to finally post a Brassens’ song… Au grand bal des quat’z’arts, nous n’irons plus danser/Les vrais enterrements viennent de commencer. (Get ready to embiggen your French vocabulary…)
If sad movies are not good for you Janet, then you shouldn’t watch Grave of the Fireflies, probably one of the best Studio Ghibli movies ever but so hard to watch. (the best would be Ou to tori, which you should absolutely watch in the original language)…
Not quite as good as Catbird, but my 85 year old grandfather has been known to hide out in the fields all night with a 50 year old shotgun and shoot at the coyotes who come after his baby calves. I imagine him sitting on an upside down bucket in his slippers with the shotgun across his lap, although, with him, you really never know. You gotta do what you gotta do when you’re an old man with a lot of cows, I guess.
Yay Tampa! I supposed if I get a chance to meet the awesome host of the JV club I can bear the fact that it’s, and I quote “Florida’s largest Anime convention”. eek…. 🙂
