How awesome that Missy was not only able to get great advice from Janet and Jessica, but also from Janet T who can provide first hand advice and knowledge. I love that there’s always such a supportive and encouraging environment.

Just wanted to drop you a note for Missy (from the JV Advice segment).. I’m in the tech industry, gender comes up occasionally, but not too often. The tech industry is pretty results oriented. If you do good work, it does get noticed. At the beginning everyone, feels intimidated started their first ‘real’ job, and she will get some shit assignments at the beginning, but it’ll probably have more to do with the fact that she’s are new then anything else.
I got the impression that she was shy/quiet. If she’s uncomfortable speaking in meetings, she should work to get over that, but in the mean time she can have side conversations with colleagues and her boss. Might help take the pressure off while she gets more comfortable with her team.
I wish her luck! And just remember, you’ll be working mostly with nerds. And yeah, I’m sure some of them have a sexist attitude, but I think it’s much less common. In general nerds like people with skills and enthusiasm. So just let your personality shine though and you’ll do just fine. Good Luck!

I like Environmental Working Group’s Skindeep Cosmetics Database for finding products that aren’t made of unicorn eyes or mountain dew or whatever. It’s fairly comprehensive and updated. Good luck overhauling your cosmetics!

I thought I’d written a comment after the last podcast, but THE DARNED OF IT IS, I don’t see it! (I want to make “the darned of it is” the next “whatever!”) I happen to have a 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew that I pulled from my fridge! The 5 main ingredients are:carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, concentrated orange juice, citric acid, and natural flavor- – – what natural flavor, don’t know. Do The Dew!!!
I remember the days of extra padding on bike helmets for kids! Back when public health people were starting to push for them for everyone but nobody was wearing them except the hardcore cyclists… kid sizes just weren’t available. And pool “friends” (back when not every house in the neighborhood had a pool, now looking at Google maps, houses without pools are the minority).

I have two kids: 4 and 7. I do struggle with giving them their space versus being over protective. When I was a kid I rode my bike all around without my parents being there. But I lived in a more rural area than my kids do now.
You don’t want to overprotect them, but also there’s so much ..stuff.. in the world.
I do drink pop. I’m not proud of it, and know I need to quit. But I do drink the stuff.

THE LAST MIMZY is a dumbed-down film version of the classic 1940s sf story “Mimsy Were the Borogoves” by Henry Kuttner…(which as you can tell took its title from Lewis Carroll, which the film-makers couldn’t leave alone, either)…it was a set of actual toys in the story, accidentally sent, which teach the present-day children new and strange ways of thinking. Not actually a kids’ story, nor even the film is quite a kids’ film, but all are enjoyable (as far as the film goes) by kids…
As someone who takes care of our office (charity-fundraising) honor bar (including the soda refrigerator), Pepsi products are moving fine (and so are Coke and Dr. Pepper/Canada Dry). Mountain Dew, a can of which I had just picked up before starting the podcast, tries to taste vaguely like grapefruit soda, aka half and half mixer, such as Canada Dry Wink or any number of, well, gf or h&h sodas. (Now, I also drink Monsters, like a fool, and even I think they taste like MD with extra industrial waste added along with the amino acids. Dr. Brown’s cream soda is tastier, but lacks the caffeine jolt. (However, even Monsters taste better to me than Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray celery soda.)(A very acquired taste, I guess they all are.)

Well…THE PRESTIGE doesn’t actually deal in clones per se…duplicates in novels such as the one the film is based on, or Algis Budrys’s profound ROGUE MOON (which he wanted to call THE DEATH MACHINE or HALT, PASSENGER, but Fawcett Books disagreed), are basically replications that would steal your boyfriend, but clones would presumably tend to run more along the lines of ORPHAN BLACK…similarities, but not identical personalities any more than twins/triplets/etc. have.
