The JV Club #56: Emily Gordon

Doughnuts, Cigarettes, and Hot Sauce, Oh My! It’s Episode 56 with Emily Gordon (The Indoor Kids), chock-full of fond remembrances of first kisses, My So Called Life, and the once-pervasive Manic Panic hair dye, the use of which apparently makes you a communist. This week’s bonus: Theories on how hot dogs got their name.

Came over from the Indoor Kids, just wanted to say thanks for the great podcast.

That said, I feel slightly like a creep after listening to this and, previously, Kumail (like we’re on a first name basis, what the) on Pete Holme’s show. Like I know too much personal information about the two of them when I don’t actually know them. It’s weird. But thanks for putting yourself out there.

  2. Leigh R says:

    Hi Janet and Emily,

As a fellow North Carolinian, my heart hurt for you, Emily, when you spoke about being called a “N-lover.” I danced with a guy friend of mine who happened to be African American at the first dance I attended in junior high school. My brother was / is a racist and he got some other kids on our school bus to call me that vey same filthy, nasty epithet on Monday morning on the ride to school. (The kids at my school were too stupid to know the word Communist!) I was incensed, but also really scared. I knew I didn’t do anything wrong, and I wasn’t about to let these stupid assholes determine who my friends would be, but that fear of getting the shit knocked out of me was terrifying.

Those jerk-offs failed to break me, clearly, and my brother now makes his living scalping tickets, and those other kids who decided to chime in are also total losers. I, however, am spectacular, and my life is so big now! I don’t mean big in the way like I’m some badass ballah (sorry, baller), I mean big in that I have amazing friends, and just get to live a decent life surrounded by people who make my world bigger and better than anything I could have ever imagined when I was that 12 year old girl, walking down the aisle of the schoolbus with her heart in her throat.
Keep up the great work, ladies!

    All the best,
    Leigh

I really really liked this episode, especially MASH at the end. The Iron Giant has been popping up in my life for two weeks, this made me finally decide to rewatch it again and I cried and cried.

    Keep being awesome!

Hi Janet!! I think a great name for the JV Club’s advice column would be The Answer Sheet! As for the mythical “Brown Note”, supposedly a note so low that no one can hear it but can cause everyone to lose control of their bowels, you should see a scientific explanation in Wikipedia, or watch South Park’s “World Wide Recorder Concert”!!

  6. darvinlikemarvin says:

I wonder if the audio setup and environment are markedly different between The Indoor Kids and the JV Club because Emily’s voice sounded way different, almost unrecognizable at times. I have to also wonder if the tone and pitch of her voice is different when she’s talking to someone not as familiar as Kumail.

JV, nice episode as always. This podcast always has such a positive and inclusive vibe. There is a relaxing quality that I greatly appreciate in the quiet conversations on this show. Thanks for being awesome!

  7. Meghan says:

First time listener to the JV club and I loved it. Particularly because, being a newbie, I didn’t know that Scott is Janet’s dog. The Scott I know in the podcasting world is Scott Aukerman. So for a few brief, but amazing, moments I though Scott Aukerman was sitting at Emily’s feet.

I can’t wait to catch up on the back episodes!

  8. Shannon says:

It’s called the Bechdel Test! This video explains it very well: http://www.feministfrequency.com/2012/02/the-2012-oscars-and-the-bechdel-test/

  9. Matt says:

  10. Terry says:

Two of my favorite people hanging out doing a podcast. Thank you world!

  11. PJ says:

Horse meat is delicious, so lean yet so tender… Wouldn’t use such nice meat for hot-dogs… But now I’m craving hot-dogs. Dammit.

Speaking of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, it’s been the subject of serious academic research. 😀

  12. Mark says:

To pop in with a quick “name doppelganger” note before listening to the full episode, British comedian Dave Gorman had a stage show and TV miniseries about trying to settle a bet on whether he could meet “loads” of Dave Gormans. (Spoiler alert: he does.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are_You_Dave_Gorman%3F

  13. Alec says:

“Get your piping-hot horse burgers, horse fries, horse cake and shakes. We got tongue straight from the horse’s mouth. All our horses are 100% horse-fed for that double-horse juiced-in goodness!”

“I’ll have the cholesterol-free omelet with horse beaters.”

“And you, sir, how can I horse you?”

    “I’ll have a horse coke.”

    “Horse Pepsi OK?”

    “Nay.”

  14. Paul says:

Kudos to you Amy for creating hotdogwarmchurchfeet.tumblr.com ! Nicely done.

  15. Rebecca Lord says:

    Janet!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnspit_Dog
“One story says that during service at a church in Bath, the Bishop of Gloucester, gave a sermon and uttered the line “It was then that Ezekiel saw the wheel…”. At the mention of the word “wheel” several turnspit dogs, who had been brought to church as foot warmers, ran for the door.”

  16. Patrick says:

Here’s something rather interesting I’ve noticed with Podcasts in general. When a male host and female host are talking their voices are rather high. When another male is introduced it’s almost like both males are trying to drown out the female. When there are two female hosts their voices are actually a little lower and when a thrid is introduced nothing really changes, yet introduce a male and his voice gets low too… Something weird, might be nothing.

Love hearing podcasts where Emily is on them, whole reason I listen to the Indoorkids. She’s just so real and honest.

  17. Joseph says:

Here are some advice column names off the top of my head.

The JV Thought Tree – Advice Column
The JV Brittle Buster – Advice Column
    JV Philosophy – Advice Column
JV, HELP ME! – Advice Column

and finally…. The VarneyVice Column – Advice to make your brittle better.

    Good luck! 🙂

  18. Agee says:

    Good episode!

  19. DEC12345 says:

Haven’t finished this episode, but this may be what Emily was thinking about. I am not sure there is any hot-dog connection…. unless the turned-spit was turning sausages over the fire.

  20. Jenny says:

Ha! The same name thing gets old when you are “Jenny Smith”. There are so many. I once went to close my bank account in University, and they almost gave me her money because we even had the same signature. Maybe this is a good idea for a t.v. show? A girl named Jenny Smith goes around and meets other Jenny Smiths and betters their lives in in some way or another. Look out pilot season… HOT DOG, that’s a great idea!

  21. Jerry says:

What is that background noise when people talk? It sounds like what tinsel (that stuff you hang on xmas trees) would sound like if it made a noise.

  22. Luke says:

I always love the show, even when the guest is someone I’m less familiar with, because there’s such a genuine atmosphere of love and care and vulnerability in these conversations.

When the guest is someone I AM a fan of, like today, it just makes things extra special! This was lovely.

If you guys are interested in the “Party Princess” phenomenon, a really awesome comic artist cum party princess named M. Alice LeGrow has started documenting her experiences textually and visually at http://theprincessforhire.com/ .

In addition to the interesting bits of princess practice and lore, she also illuminates some really subtle and interesting observations about class (for some children who will never go to Disneyland, her presence IS Disneyland and a HUGE deal, while for other children she’s just one of many expensive, pretty birthday party accessories – consequently parents of modest means tend to be more appreciative tippers) and gender (there are men who work for the company doing “super hero” parties, but sometimes she’ll be supergirl at a girls’ party… she articulates how the princess stuff can also be empowering and magical, too, for young girls).

Anyway, it’s super-interesting, and since Emily didn’t get her MASH career as a party princess, she may enjoy vicariously reading about how that sort of job goes down.

  23. Amy says:

Maybe I made this instead of getting ready for work this morning? hotdogwarmchurchfeet.tumblr.com. Wonderful episode as usual!
