A far cry from the overly-tan, dog-frenching Magda of There’s Something About Mary fame, actress Lin Shaye gives Janet a peek into her aptly-named girl gang The Coquettes, the challenge of a corkscrew ponytail, and what you can expect from a psychedelic wedding.

Thanks for the comments, friends! I’m especially thrilled that PJ enjoyed the moccasin anecdote as much as I did. It’s probably one of my favorite mentions on any episode ever. It’s just SO PERFECT.
So interesting to hear from a woman with an older perspective, but not completely old-fashioned. I looked her up on IMB and was shocked to see she’s 69, as old as my mom! Yoga does a body good!
I like the story of Lin’s mother, coming from Russia (I guess the Soviet Union back then)… Children and teenagers are more able to learn languages than adults in general. They call one’s mother tongue a “mother” tongue quite literally, because babies pick it up from their mother, but they can absorb a lot. During the teenage years, the social circle usually becomes the school friends and that influences language a lot as well, and accents will adapt to that group, no longer the one of the family unit. It’s true of a lot of immigrants, but it happens even in the mother tongue…. (Speaking of which, Mila Kunis would be a nice guest for the podcast). Still, it’s quite a feat to pick up a second language and suppress the mother-tongue accent (or so my ex-wife would remind me; it baffles me sometimes to see adults not learn or master languages they are immersed in, yet I am so jealous of multilingual people, like my PhD supervisor’s kids who are perfectly trilingual before hitting their teens).
Many more things to talk about, I guess I’ll just mention the making of moccasins… I just loved that anecdote too. So quaint (it’s the best word I could come up with, lousy limited vocabulary).
Loved this episode, there was so much in it that I think a lot of people would identify with (myself included), like putting yourself in someone’s shadow but then feeling angry about it and getting caught up in all the frustration which results from the decision to not put yourself forward. It’s amazing how sometimes all you need is for someone to remind you that it is a decision which you make, and therefore it’s within your control to do something different.
Lin part 2 please!
Caboodle is an amazing pet name.
I’m halfway through the episode and it is a joy thus far. It is so nice to hear somebody talk with perspective on life.
Did Lin Shaye insult a make up artist early in her career? Until I saw this photo I had no idea that she is such an attractive woman. Hollywood make up artist conspiracy?
She was best on ‘Kingpin’.
