The Joker Stars in His Own Snickers Commercial

For 76 years, the Joker has been one of the most famous comic book villains and Batman‘s deadliest enemy. Now, he’s…a candy bar pitchman?

It’s true! The Joker starred in a Snickers ad in 2013 that was released in the Middle East. It’s been making the rounds this week after a post by Mighty Mega, and it was part of the “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign.

In the ad, a card game among friends is disrupted by the Clown Prince of Crime as he gleefully offers to give the winner a night out through the window of their apartment before unleashing the Joker’s signature laugh. We’re not sure who portrays the Joker in this commercial, but he does a good job of conveying a sense of menace. His makeup is a little too Cesar Romero, but that costume’s pretty accurate to the classic comic book depictions.

Naturally, the Joker’s rampage comes to a premature end once he tastes a Snickers and reverts to his true self. There are two takeaways from this ad. Apparently the Joker is popular enough in the Middle East to warrant this advertisement. And it’s also kind of shocking that there wasn’t a remake of the commercial in North America.

However, there was another version of this ad filmed for the Middle Eastern market, which was, to put it charitably, not as good.

It’s a shorter take on the same commercial with different actors. But execution is everything, and this simply wasn’t as entertaining as the English language version.
