THE HUNGER GAMES Gets a Stage Show

The popularity of The Hunger Games has spread from the books by Suzanne Collins to a successful film franchise and now, the story is headed to the stage. No, seriously. The Hunger Games theatrical experience is coming to Wembley Stadium in London. The brand new theater was built specifically for this show. What will viewers of the stage show see? We don’t know.

Because the concept of a live Hunger Games show is so off the wall, the production company really should have provided a tease so that we don’t think the worst. The story takes some dark and brutal turns and some scenes in the first Hunger Games movie were especially hard to watch because of that. How will they portray the child-on-child violence in a live setting without making it horrific? My mind is reeling and coming up with all the ways it could go wrong. Katniss and I need a moment to process.

The show will be produced by Broadway vet Robin de Levita and his company Imagine Nation in partnership with Lionsgate and Triangular Entertainment. Harvey Goldsmith, Warren Adams, Brandon Victor Dixon, Robert Harris, and Gary Ricci are also involved as producers. De Levita has used creative formats for recent productions in Holland that feature rotating auditoriums and stages, including a play based on The Diary of Anne Frank. He’s looking forwarding to adapting The Hunger Games, too. From the press release:

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with an innovative next generation studio like Lionsgate on a property that resonates so deeply with global audiences. The theater is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins’ writing to life.”

The Hunger Games theatrical experience is set to launch in summer 2016. You can get your Katniss fix in the meantime by seeing The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 when it premieres on November 21st.
