The Hulk Turns Green Because He’s One Big Bruise

OK, so we still can’t explain how the Hulk’s pants stay on (does Bruce Banner always wear hyper-elastic jeans?), but the science behind his incredible strength and emerald hue is fairly open to fully-clothed investigation.

In my latest Because Science, I dive into biology and genetics to speculate on the changes to Banner’s genome and explain my favorite theory on why the Hulk turns green — his transformation gives him a giant, body-wide bruise.
