The Hasbro Cinematic Universe Assembles Its Writers Room

Last year, Hasbro Studios and Paramount Pictures announced an ambitious plan to create a new cinematic universe for G.I. Joe, Rom, M.A.S.K., Visionaries, and Micronauts. Basically, all of the non-Transformers toylines that Hasbro released in the ’80s. Now, Hasbro and Paramount have brought together an impressive group of screenwriters to make their cinematic universe dreams into a reality.

If you’re a fan of comic books or comic book movies, you’re gonna love this. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Hasbro Cinematic Universe writers room includes acclaimed comic book scribe Brian K. Vaughan, Spider-Man 2 and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay writer Michael Chabon, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel screenwriter Nicole Perlman, Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole, Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Coker, and the screenwriting duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote Vacation and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

That’s a lot of talent coming from Marvel’s film and television divisions. But that’s not entirely surprising since the Hasbro Cinematic Universe is clearly inspired by the success that Marvel Studios has enjoyed since 2008. However, there are significant challenges to making this work. While G.I. Joe and M.A.S.K. could easily share the same world, it would be difficult to tie them into the narratives of Visionaries and Micronauts. Marvel had the advantage of a pre-existing universe to draw upon. Hasbro’s writers will have to create the connections from scratch.

Akiva Goldsman is leading the Hasbro Cinematic Universe writers room, which met for the first time this past Monday. Other writers also on board this initiative include Geneva Robertson (Tomb Raider), Jeff Pinkner (Fringe), and Lindsey Beer (Kingkiller Chronicle).
