Last week, principal photography wrapped on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and in just under a year, it’ll be time to revisit the MCU’s outlaw heroes as they share a new adventure set to the Awesome Mix Vol. 2. While director James Gunn has maintained a pretty tight lid on the film’s secrets, the synopsis for the sequel has now been released.
Via Marvel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the teamâs adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quillâs true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
Here’s what we know for sure about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:Â Pom Klementieff is playing Mantis, one of the founding members of the modern incarnation of the team in the Marvel Universe. That means she’s pretty much a lock to join the MCU’s Guardians as well. This synopsis fuels the previous rumors that Yondu and Nebula will also join the team in this movie. For Yondu, that’s not too much of a stretch, given his affection for Peter Quill even while he was hunting him down across the galaxy. The comic book incarnation of Yondu was one of the original Guardians from the future, but that guy had a completely different personality than the one that Michael Rooker portrayed onscreen.
Nebula is gonna be tricky. She’s never been a heroine in the Marvel Universe, and we don’t expect her to reform for Guardians 2. That doesn’t mean that Karen Gillan‘s deadly alien assassin can’t find some common ground with her adoptive sister, Gamora. But it would be shocking if Nebula remained with the Guardians after the events of the movie.
The truly intriguing line from that synopsis is “fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroesâ aid.” The most popular theory is that Kurt Russell is playing Adam Warlock, and he would definitely fit the description “fan-favorite.” If we ever spot any set pictures with Russell in full body gold makeup, then it will be pretty obvious who he’s playing! But Warlock isn’t the only potential character who could also work in this role. We can also picture Russell as Captain Mar-Vell, which would be an excellent way to introduce the character who went on to inspire Carol Danvers to become both Ms. Marvel and later, Captain Marvel. Either Warlock or Mar-Vell would be great choices to be Peter Quill’s father, since Gunn has indicated (several times) that J’Son of Spartax will not be Quill’s dad in the MCU.
Other potential Marvel fan-favorites who could show up include Cosmo the telepathic Russian dog, and Howard the Duck, both of whom appeared in the previous film as parts of the Collector’s menagerie. However, we can probably rule them out of the running for Quill’s father!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released on May 5, 2017.
