While Marvel has dominated the superhero box office for the last eight years, DC continues to control your TV. Wondering what’s in store for your favorite DC Universe shows this season on The CW? We got an update about all things Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow straight from the mouths of producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, Sarah Schechter, Wendy Mericle, Phil Klemmer, Aaron Helbing, and Todd Helbing at Thursday’s Television Critics Association‘s summer press tour.
First and foremost, DC TV mastermind Greg Berlanti announced a major step-ball-change coming to The Flash and Supergirl: a musical crossover episode.
“There will be a musical crossover,” says Berlanti, leading things off. “There’s gonna be a musical pair of episodes in the back half of the year between Supergirl and Flash. We have a number of people who can sing across all the shows. That’s not to be confused with the crossover we’ll be doing across the nights in late November/early December.”
Following the news that CW Seed would be creating its first LGBT-led superhero series with Freedom Fighters: The Ray, producer Andrew Kreisberg noted a character on one of The CW’s flagship DC shows will be coming out of the closet this season.
“One of the characters on one of the shows,” adds Kreisberg, “is gonna be exploring their sexuality and coming out.”
And for those of you yearning for the return of fan-favorite directors to your favorite DC TV series, you’re in luck. Kreisberg adds that Kevin Smith will return to direct an episode of Supergirl and an episode of The Flash.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg, though. Let’s get into it, shall we?
Supergirl
Good news, Young Justice fans! Miss Martian — J’onn J’onzz’s niece in the comics — is coming to Supergirl. And, yes, Mon-El, who is the occupant of that space pod that crashed in season 1’s finale, will be played by Chris Wood (also known in the comics as Valor). Cat Grant will now be a recurring character, still played by Calista Flockhart. And part of this season’s story will be about different people “trying to fill her role,” says Kreisberg.
As the world now knows, Superman is also joining the show…
“In the premiere,” says Kreisberg, “a threat is going to arise that’s going to require Supergirl and Superman to team up.”
Arrow
“In [episode 7] of Arrow,” says Guggenheim, “we’ll be introducing Vigilante, the Marv Wolfman [comic book] version.”
Dolph Lundgren will also be introduced as a character in this season’s flashbacks, which is equal parts insane and awesome. This season, it’s worth noting, will be the last to feature flashbacks. RIP terrible island wigs, we hardly knew ye.
Legends of Tomorrow
As we learned at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, season two of Legends of Tomorrow will see our ragtag crew meeting members of the Justice Society of America. The show’s executive producer shed more light on who exactly we’ll be meeting during Thursday’s panel.
“We have Lance Henriksen appearing for the first time in Legends,” says Phil Klemmer, “as Obsidian, a member of the JSA.”
Most importantly, Greg Berlanti noted that The Flash and Supergirl won’t be the only shows to feature a musical number this season. Apparently, Victor Garber’s Martin Stein will be singing “Edelweiss” to a bunch of Nazis on the time-traveling TV show’s second season.
The Flash
The big November crossover will start with The Flash and move across all four shows, with effects from “Flashpoint” spilling across the DC TV universe. Doctor Alchemy will be one of this season’s Big Bads, while the other will be Savitar, who is another speedster.
As for the this season’s “Flashpoint” adaptation, “The Flash,” says Kreisberg, “picks up with Barry living in this new version of events and having to deal with some of the benefits that’s presented to him as well as some of the costs.”
