Of all the DC Extended Universe films coming down the pipeline, none has as much stacked against it as the big screen version of The Flash. This is because there is currently a very popular Flash TV show airing on the CW, which will (presumably) be in the middle of its fourth season by the time the film comes out. The question on everyone’s minds is, “What the heck can the Flash movie give us that we don’t get for free every week?”
Well, if the latest rumor coming from Heroic Hollywood is to be believed, then the movie isn’t going to be giving us just one villain: it’s going to be giving us a lot of them. According to their report, it will be The Rogues (as Barry Allen’s bad guys are known as a collective) giving Ezra Miller’s Flash a hard time. Which grouping of Rogues is still a mystery, as every Flash villain has fought against is considered a part of this troop, with maybe the sole exception of the Reverse Flash, who tends to always work alone.
The current grouping of Rogues in the comics is Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Heat Wave, Weather Wizard, the Trickster, Pied Piper, the Top, and Captain Boomerang. Of those villains, only Captain Boomerang has not appeared or has not been announced as appearing soon on the TV series (perhaps because of his role in Suicide Squad, although he did appear on Arrow). While the TV show has most of these villains, so far, they tend to work alone or maybe, as in the case of Captain Cold and Heat Wave, as a duo. We’ve yet to see them all get together and gang up on the Flash, and it could be that they are saving that particular phenomenon for the big screen.
Another interesting aspect of the Rogues: In the comics, they aren’t exactly evil with a capital E. They’re more like lovable thugs, and they have a gentleman’s agreement with Flash not to kill innocents, and not to kill Flash either. At least most of them do, anyway. The idea that their rivalry is all big game to them is something the TV series hasn’t explored, but that a movie might. Of course, this all rumor for the time being, so take it with a grain of salt. The Flash, starring Ezra Miller and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, is set to hit theaters on March 18, 2018.
Are you stoked about the Flash potentially taking on all his enemies in one movie, or are you just fine with the TV show version, and plan to skip this one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
