August cannot come soon enough, because we need to see this film! It’s been a long time since Edgar Wright wrote and directed a film (we were so close with Ant-Man) and–judging by the footage in the first trailer–his upcoming Baby Driver is absolutely oozing with his distinct style. And, as luck would have it, we also get to check out the international trailer here too!
The gist of the film is quite neatly explained in the trailers, so we know we’re getting an action/comedy crime flick with a fair amount of car chases and a star-studded cast. Ansel Elgort (The Divergent series, The Fault In Our Stars) plays “Baby” a, let’s say, driving savant serving as a getaway driver for criminals under the employ of Kevin Spacey’s menacing crime boss character. Among the cast of no-goodniks are Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eiza González, and Jon Bernthal. With Baby seemingly backed into a corner (something we learned a long time ago that you should never do) he needs to fight his way out in order to start a life with his new love played by Lily James.
While all that seems awesome (and we’re sure it will be), what we’re really excited about is Edgar Wright writing and directing his first film since 2013’s The World’s End. The film also has cinematographer Bill Pope (The World’s End, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Matrix) onboard and, judging from the trailers, we’re already seeing some signature things he and Wright do so well. The two and a half minutes we see are filled with unorthodox camera angles, quick zooms, match cuts, and smash cuts that seem in tune with the action. And, considering Baby’s music plays a big part in his character, we can probably expect a fantastic soundtrack cleverly worked into the film.
If the trailers are any indication, it would seem Wright’s been itching at giving us some beautiful shots with vibrant color palettes and, in the moment Baby and his girlfriend are talking, a shot that just screams “EDGAR WRIGHT NEEDS TO BE DIRECTING EVERYTHING!”
Ok, maybe we just screamed that. We stand by it, though.
