Itâs the end of an era at Konami, as all indications are that legendary game director Hideo Kojima will leave the company once Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hits next month. It may even be the last game in the Metal Gear Solid series!
Kojima personally edited the final launch trailer for The Phantom Pain, and the first half is a very nostalgic look back at the seriesâ past. While the Metal Gear franchise began in 1987, the trailer takes us back to the original Metal Gear Solid from 1998. From there, it takes us through every subsequent game in the franchise leading up to the grand finale.
Special attention is paid to Naked Snake, the man destined to become Big Boss in the original Metal Gear. Gamers have followed Naked Snakeâs evolution since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. But after Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeros, Naked Snake is no more. Now known as Venom Snake, the future Big Boss is out for revenge in the midst of the Soviet-Afghan war in 1984.
The trailer promises that this is the final piece of the story, and the last step towards Venom Snakeâs ascension. To bring everything full circle, perhaps heâll also seize control of Outer Heaven.
But before you think this is all just a trip down memory lane, the new Phantom Pain trailer also introduces âthe Ultimate Metal Gear”: Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. Itâs pretty f–king big, and itâs rockin’ an electro-sword!
In case you were wondering, the song playing through the trailer is “Quiet’s Theme,” which was written by Akihiro Honda with lyrics by Ludvig Forssell. It was performed by Stefanie Joosten.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will launch on September 1 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
