For many Star Wars fans, 2015’s release of The Force Awakens is the year that their beloved space opera franchise truly returnted to them. However, some of us will also remember it as the greatest year ever for trailer mash-ups and crossovers, because the movie inspired a litany of superb new trailers for both the original and prequel trilogies done in the style of J.J. Abrams new entry to the saga. Now it looks like 2016 is already getting ready to lay claim to that title, because the tremendous new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already inspiring a slew of great mash-up trailers inspired by it, like this fantastic one for The Empire Strikes Back.
Made by YouTube user Medley Weaver, the second (or fifth, if you’re counting episodically) Star Wars movie gets recut in the style of the latest trailer for the upcoming prequel/anthology film set to be released this December. I love the new Rogue One trailer so much that I find myself in that group of people that are more excited for it than I was to see The Force Awakens (and that’s quite high praise because I thought The Force Awakens‘ trailers were tremendous and haunting in a beautiful way), so yes, I think this reimagining is absolutely fantastic. That music set to Empire (which has the advantage of not having to worry about spoiling anything) gives the film a gravitas and sense of doom that has me ready to watch it again right now.
You can’t ask for much more from a trailer than that. Except for the internet to start working on even more of them. So please, get to work. We have a lot of time to kill until December.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
