In case you’ve forgotten, 2017 is the year that it’s happening: Patrick Stewart is playing the poop emoji in the upcoming The Emoji Movie. It seems too awful/fantastic to be true, but now, with the release of the movie’s official trailer, we have concrete proof that the crappiest role of Stewart’s career is for real.
Stewart pops up at the very end of the trailer, escorting his likewise fecal son out of a bathroom and laughing at the idea of washing their hands. There’s a lot more to the trailer than that, though. For instance, we learn more about our man protagonist: Gene, a “meh” emoji voiced by T.J. Miller who, unlike most others in his world, can and wants to experience multiple emotions. As you’d imagine, that turns out to me a problem in the strictly regulated emoji community. Emojis show a singular expression for a reason, and Gene’s rebel spirit could compromise the whole operation.
In a quest to find his purpose, Gene is accompanied by Hi-5 (voiced by James Corden) and Jailbreak (Anna Faris) to “get off the phone and find the source code,” as Jailbreak put it. They encounter dangers including a firewall, pursuit by Maya Rudolph’s Smiler, and others that we’ll learn about when the film hits theaters on July 28.
