The DOCTOR WHO/THE FORCE AWAKENS Mashup Trailer You Need

We’ve seen a lot of mashup trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in recent months, mostly because each of that movie’s trailers was frigging awesome. But in order to make a great mashup, it takes more than just putting the same music and/or dialogue to a new set of images; to make it great, you have to really make sure the matching is spot-on thematically. YouTuber VG934 has created what I think is probably the best TFA trailer mashup of all time, putting the music and pacing of the finale theatrical trailer with scenes from the first series of Doctor Who from 2005.

Perfectly pairing characters from Doctor Who with their Star Wars counterparts, we get Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) taking the Rey role as the simple girl who never thought she’d be a great hero; we get Christopher Eccleston‘s Ninth Doctor fitting into the Finn spot, the war veteran who’s remorseful and wants to make amends; and acting as the Kylo Ren, we actually have the Dalek from the episode “Dalek,” which at last gave the Doctor’s perennial enemy a bit of pathos. And it was incredibly fortunate that “The Day of the Doctor” finally showed us bits and pieces of the Time War, because in series one, the Doctor talks about it but we never actually see anything (mostly because budgets weren’t super high back then).

There’s something so epic about that John Williams music that it could make anything look cool — it just so happens the first series of Doctor Who is pretty damn cool on its own. Win-win. The 2005 season was already a huge hit for BBC One when it premiered in March of that year, but I’d almost wonder if it would have been even bigger had this been the trailer that promoted it. 11 years on, Eccleston’s only outing still packs a wallop.

Let me know your thoughts on this mashup trailer, and how much it makes you want to rewatch series one, in the comments below!
