Since its release in 2003, it’s become clear that The Room will forever be the masterpiece of Tommy Wiseau‘s career, but probably not in the way that he intended. This midnight cinema favorite has become beloved for its less-than-stellar performances and writing, as it works really well as an unintended comedy. Later this year, James Franco will portray Wiseau in the offbeat “making-of” film The Disaster Artist, and if the first trailer for the film is any indication, there’s still a lot of humor to be found in the story behind The Room.
Dave Franco stars alongside his brother as Greg Sestero, the co-star and line producer of The Room. In the trailer, we get a look at Sestero and Wiseau’s unique friendship and their shared quest for Hollywood glory that led them to make their own movie together. Sestero went on to write The Disaster Artist as a chronicle of everything that went into making The Room. There are also a couple of callbacks to The Room in the trailer as well, including some awkward football throwing and Wiseau’s insistence that he has to show his ass to sell the movie.
Seth Rogen only has a few scenes in the new trailer, but he has one of the bigger roles as Sandy Schklair, the script supervisor of The Room. Josh Hutcherson, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Hannibal Buress, Melanie Griffith, Sharon Stone, and Jacki Weaver co-star in the film, and the real Wiseau will also have a cameo as well.
The Disaster Artist will open in theaters on December 1.
