The Man In Black will flee across the desert, and The Gunslinger will follow… sooner than we may have expected. It wasn’t all that long ago that we reported that Sony was in the process of finding a director to spearhead the adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. Now that Nikolaj Arcel is set comfortably in the driver’s seat, it seems Sony is ready to get this show on the road. Today, Sony announced release dates for a slew of movies that will hit theaters over the next several years, and on that list The Dark Tower is proudly displayed with its initial release date of January 13th, 2017. You can watch a complete breakdown of what this news means on today’s Nerdist News:
This news answers one question about the adaptation, but raises many others. Simply listing the title as The Dark Tower calls into question Sony’s previous plan to release The Dark Tower adaptation as a series of films and interconnecting television series in collaboration with Media Rights Capital. Of course, the title is more than likely just a place holder until they decide on a final one, such as The Dark Tower: Gunslinger or something of the sort. Especially since it seems Arcel is currently only set to direct one film, and Sony knows there is no way they would pull off The Dark Tower in only one film. Well, not without making it at least 10 hours long.
Several other films on the list were placed on there with changed dates than what had previously been revealed, so even this announcement does not make the January 2017 date set in stone. Still, it is at least a far sight better than the “maybe one day” dreams the project has had for several years now.
