The Collection: In Which Patton Oswalt Wins The Internet, and the World

Collection200x200We’ve been a little busy here at Nerdist.com, so there’s a buncha stuff piled up in the corner for The Collection. I’ll get them to you as quickly as I can. The first batch includes one man’s amazing week and an adorable double act. Here we go:

Patton Oswalt continues to be a particularly awesome human. If you haven’t seen his amazing “filibuster” — a long extemporaneous monologue about Star Wars, plus The Avengers and the tiers of the Marvel Universe, and Clash of the Titans thrown in because he could — done for Parks and Recreation, you HAVE to see this:

I have no idea how the people in the gallery didn’t react. I would have been cheering.

And, of course, there was his Facebook post about Boston:

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

Patton won the Internet this week. It almost makes up for his championing of Walking the Room. (FULL DISCLOSURE: I, too, support/enable Greg and Dave. I know, I’ll pay for that in the next life…)

But there was also a bearded Jon Hamm and new-voice Elmo on Sesame Street:

And… well, there’s more, but we’ll have it later today. (UPDATE: Okay, more like tomorrow. It’s busier than I expected around here tonight…)

  1. Anthony says:

Patton’s mega franchises jam should be the first film from the Nerdist. His freeform stream of thought was shear Nerdist poetry. Bravo Mr Oswalt!

  2. GuanoLad says:

I don’t think that is a new performer for Elmo yet. Kevin Clash had a few sketches backed up in the bank before he left.

  3. bastien says:

    It’s Kashyyyk, not “Kashi-yak”.

And the X-Men don’t fly a quinjet, they fly an RS-150 Blackbird.

    NERD STATUS REVOKED.

  4. Steve Reeve says:

Don’t forget about his appearance in FoD’s latest “Badman” sketch. In which our hero plays the nefarious villain Oswald (Oswalt?) “Penguin” Cobblepot, and turns out to be not so villainous in comparison after all.
