After one attempt at a show with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay on Comedy Central (Big Lake), doing a live variety/talk/game show at UCB in NYC where he got P. Diddy to make an appearance, taking that show to public access (which I’m sure many Americans would be surprised that actual people still do), turning in currently 116 episodes, being “adopted” by IFC, dancing like Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air while holding Ritz Crackers outside of a particular hotel (yes, “The Ritz Carlton“), writing a book about following his bad ideas, starting a slogan “Lose Well,” and so many other feats that would warrant a whole other book, Chris Gethard has finally gotten a pilot order for The Chris Gethard Show at Comedy Central (via Deadline).
If you’re unacquainted with The Chris Gethard Show, it wouldn’t be out of turn to say it’s one of the funniest and most daring things not on broadcast television. Gethard acts as a ring leader to a controlled chaos of unbelievably bizarre, but hilarious characters, personal challenges by Chris for Chris himself (i.e. taking shots from a Muay Thai fighter if he fails in a quiz on how well he knows his friends), taking live calls from anywhere, live music, nights of sandwiches/no laughs/etc., and so much more that makes for a great public access show that will hopefully make it the light of millions of TVs across the country.
The announcement came late last night as Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Funny or Die, and Zach Galifianakis have attached themselves to the project and, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, this is fantastic news for the comedy world. Even just as a pilot order, this news affirms what the Gethard faithful across the planet have known for some time now: that Chris Gethard should have a show on non-public access television and that show should be The Chris Gethard Show. In a more general and oversimplified sense, it affirms that someone can be given a big break when they absolutely deserve it.
I can only hope that I get to write a headline relatively soon that Comedy Central would make an incredibly smart move by picking up the series and go further to say that it will be a routine thing to see an ad for The Chris Gethard Show like this except with Comedy Central’s logo:
