Which scenario do you imagine would produce a more interesting outcome: when a bunch of young and upcoming stand-ups live and perform together, or when someone gives eight comedians complete and total freedom to create any episode of television they want? Well, it doesn’t matter either way, because we’re going to be able to watch both, thanks to two very new (very different) shows putting the next generation of comedians in the spotlight.
The first show, Flophouse, comes from Viceland, where “filmmaker Lance Bangs explores the underground circuit of young comedians” that don’t just perform together, but actually live together. Right from their own homes they throw parties and stand-up shows complete with live audiences. Though based on the trailer they don’t often clean up after either of them.
“It’s known for being a shitty place, but it’s really not that bad.”
Flophouse looks to be a documentary, behind-the-scenes style show, but one that will still include plenty of actual standup—and it all begins on February 29th.
If Viceland’s show is all about what goes on in the lives of young comedians trying to make it, Netflix‘s show, The Characters, is all about what those people are capable of doing when given complete and total freedom to make something.
Netflix gave eight comedians a single episode each without any rules or limits on what they could do with it. The eight comedians chosen were Kate Berlant, Dr. Brown, Paul Downs, John Early, Lauren Lapkus, Tim Robinson, Natasha Rothwell, and Henry Zebrowski, and based on the trailer they didn’t waste their opportunity.
“Okay, so we all know how this show works. I can only choose three of you to have sex with.”
All episodes of The Characters are available on Netflix on March 11.
