If you, like us, are a fan of Laika and their amazing film The Boxtrolls, then hold on to your butts, because we have some amazing news. First Second Books is giving us the honor of announcing the debut graphic novel from Graham Annable, Oscar nominated cartoonist and animator (not to mention director of the aforementioned The Boxtrolls). The book is called Peter & Ernesto and it follows the adventures of two sloths who are best friends. Sloths who are best friends! Now, that alone sounds adorable enough to make it an instant buy in our book, but you add in the fact that this thing is being crafted by one of the crazy geniuses from Laika and now we are all fired up with supreme excitement.
Annable looks to be bringing that all-ages charm Laika is known for to Peter & Ernesto. It’s also clearly a very personal book for him. As Annable told us, “as a father of two young children I’m so excited to tell a story of two very different personalities finding their own individual paths in the world. I hope that folks, big and small, of all ages and temperaments, will enjoy the adventures of Peter & Ernesto.” We don’t know much about the book yet, but we do know it involves the curious to a fault Ernesto dragging his nervous and shy best bud Peter on adventure to “chase after the sky around the world.” Sounds crazy town banana pants and that’s a good thing.
There’s no official release date for Peter & Ernesto yet, but we’ll just watch Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls on repeat while we patiently wait. First Second has a track record of putting out some of the finest graphic novels around, like Box Brown’s Andre the Giant, Paul Pope’s Battling Boy, Gene Luen Yang’s Boxers and Saints, and of course Scott McCloud’s epic The Sculptor. These folks deliver the goods, so if they are behind Peter & Ernesto then you can pretty much bet on the fact that it’ll be fantastic.
Are you looking forward to Peter & Ernesto? Let us know in the comments below.
