THE BOOK OF LIFE’s New Trailer is Catnip For NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Fans

When we saw the first trailer for the Guillermo del Toro-produced The Book Of Life, we were instantly hooked. All the visuality! The colors! The shapes! The fantasy of it all! Now we’ve got a second trailer and it has confirmed our suspicions: this one is going to be one hell of a visual feast.

Taking a page from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the fairy tale has quite a few things going for it that make up for the fact that it’s, y’know, a kids’ movie. After taking quite the spin ’round the delightfully insane (and very visual) mind of del Toro, Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration has its brilliant visuals brought to life in The Land of the Remembered, a fantastical dreamscape from which our hero, Manolo (Diego Luna), must escape in order to win the love of one particularly sassy princess named Maria (Zoe Saldana).

The film also features the sort of cheeky humor we’d expect from a del Toro-led fairy tale — complete with Channing Tatum muscle-flexing (because that’s what he’s here for, right? We kid, Channing: we kid!).

Still, the plot is a bit more complicated than all that, as it also involves two gambling spirit types who’ve placed bets on which suitor (Tatum or Luna) will ultimately win Maria’s heart. But if you expect said spirits to go gently into that good night should their handsome prince lose out, ha ha ha, think again!

The Book of Life stars Saldana, Luna, and Tatum alongside Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Kate del Castillo, and Eugenio Derbez and debuts on October 17th — just in time for Halloween, natch.

Don’t get me wrong….I am going to see the hell out of this. But isn’t it basically a latin “Corpse Bride?” Looks incredible though. I have a feeling 3D will be amazing.
