The Best Video Game Mods Of 2014

Say what you want about adamant PC gaming loyalists, their machines’ ability to alter games is a quality that console gamers could only wish for. The self-proclaimed master race is the foundation for some of gaming’s most creative and entertaining variants of our favorite titles, and today, we’re going to take a look at several of this year’s best in user-created game modifications.

Bigby Wolf rides “dat pony.”

Bigby Wolf does a pretty nice job working on the many cases of Fabletown, but little did we know he’s even better at working the stripper pole. In this highly amusing mod from The Wolf Among Us, Bigby makes his bid to become one of the breakout cast members in Magic Mike 2. This has got to be one of the most hilarious video game mods ever, and I’m pretty sure that was the aim since it doesn’t affect gameplay in any fashion. Watch closely as the characters around Bigby go completely oblivious to his pelvic sorcery. You want it? Let’s do it. Ride it, my pony! (I bet that’s stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Thank me later!)

The third-person Oculus Rift mod.

For no apparent reason, I’d like to play as myself in a video game. I’d be able to experience the frequent lonely nights in my bedroom, the awkward exchanges with LA residents, and all of the wonderful days of being myself, all from glorious third-person view. Thanks to a vomit-inducing Oculus Rift mod by development group Mepi, this is very much so possible. The mod allows you to view yourself from a third-person view via a mounted camera attached to your back. I think it’s pretty damn legit, even if it’s not my original desire of actually being in a video game. Besides, you won’t be seeing me play Frogger with this thing at any point in time.

Frozen invades Grand Theft Auto.

For every time I heard the song “Let It Go,” I hopped onto Grand Theft Auto V and ran over another 10 civilians. Well, I guess the universe caught wind of my antics, and the characters of Frozen have in return invaded the world of Grand Theft Auto IV in this mod by youtube user boblester122. They even gave the movie’s most popular song a Rockstar Games-like spin, which did wonders to amplify the comedy in this video. I simply can’t not wait to see what types of mods folks come up with for GTA V.

Project M helps keep the Super Smash Bros. spirit alive.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is regarded by many as the single greatest iteration of the franchise ever, so it should come as no surprise that fans of the game have had a hard time letting go. Not to mention the fact that Super Smash Bros. Brawl really wasn’t up to par with the standards Melee fans were expecting for a sequel. But Project M, a mod used to alter the gameplay of Super Smash Bros. Brawl to play more like Melee, saw some of its most significant upgrade this year, with 3.0 and 3.5 both landing during this holiday. This reciprocated in some of the best numbers seen for the mod since its 2011 launch, landing over 920,000 downloads. Super Smash Bros. Wii U may be out and amazing in its own right, but Project M has kept the spirit of vintage Smash Bros. alive. Long live wave dashing!

On the motorsports side of things, a couple of guys made a Shelby Cobra mod for Assetto Corsa that’s so incredible that the developers added it into the game. Highly recommend checking out AC, it just got a full steam release and is probably my game of the year, despite the mediocre AI and lack of any story line. The physics and visuals are just that good.

Only four mods? Really? What about Sims mods, or Skyrim mods, or Kerbal mods…or even Goat Simulator mods? Best of 2014? Lol no. This list should have been much longer.

I’d give the nod to Skyrim’s “Familiar Faces” mod, which allows you to import characters from your other save files/games into your main game to act as followers. Used with multi-follower mods, I’ve turned Skyrim into an old school party-based dragonslaying RPG, using all characters of my own creation, and all designated to do specific actions in combat.
