The BBC Is Working on a New Streaming Service, “Britflix”

For casual viewers, Netflix actually has a pretty vast offering of British movies and TV shows, but for more serious connoisseurs of U.K. entertainment, that just may not be enough. Thankfully for that crowd, a new streaming service, tentatively titled Britflix, is on the way.

Although it’s still very early in development, it was just announced that England’s two major television networks, BBC and ITV, got approval from the government to go forward with developing a British streaming service to rival Netflix, according to The Telegraph. The service would supposedly make use of BBC’s already implemented iPlayer to deliver content.

Speaking of content, just what types of shows could potentially be on Britflix? Well, aside from BBC and ITV, some other production companies are potentially also involved, including NBC Universal, the parent company of Carnival Film, who fans will know as the makers of Downton Abbey. Although this is purely speculative and there’s no firm news on this front as of yet, we have to imagine that Britflix would make a strong push to include Doctor Who in its streaming library if it wants to be a serious competitor to Netflix and other more established services.

The two aforementioned shows are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but Britflix could be tempting enough to lure users away from Amazon, especially those whose main impetus for paying for Prime was to access these shows. That, along with the fact that Britflix theoretically has the entirety of the BBC archives at its disposal, and the fact that Britflix could also offer new original British programming, might make the new service a must-have for fans of English television.
