Axent Wear’s Indiegogo campaign to make these kicked off yesterday with their initial funding goal being set at $250,000. As of the writing of this story, the campaign has currently received $314,630. I’m sure if I wanted to be obsessive compulsive and refresh the Indiegogo page, that figure would be substantially higher.
It’s pretty clear to see that these are destined to be a hot commodity in the nerd-verse. I mean, come on, the thing has external speakers installed into cat ears! Any mention of the word cat warrants a 90% definitive purchase of anything involved, and those numbers are amplified when you take my fashion and daily music consumption into account. Outside of the fact that the headphones are straight up kawaii as f***, they also boast quite a viable feature as well, allowing folks without headphones to enjoy tunes with the external speakers. The core specifications of these may not live up to any hardcore audiophile’s expectations, but again: who cares? They’re cat ears!

You’d be surprised. And yes, the external speakers seem contradicting, but they also seem pretty rad at the same time.
You’re wrong on that second point. More than once I’ve been listening to music and wanted to share a song with a person next to me, causing an awkward “here, put this earbud in and I’ll put in the other one so we can both listen” situation. If you prefer over-the-ear headphones, it’s even worse because you can’t share at all. They’re not for people that only want speakers and don’t plan on using the headphones or vice versa – they’re for people that might switch between the two.
Also the popularity of the campaign for these and the necomimi ear means you’re wrong on your first point as well.
