After tonight’s The 100, you can’t deny that the Skaikru is determined to accomplish their task no matter what. The final war against ALIE began in the first hour of the season three finale, “Perverse Instantiation — Part One,” and while there were no official deaths for the “good guys,” there were most definitely some losses. It was a dark hour, full of tension and heartbreaking revelations. Let’s get right into recapping it all.
Faced with no better choice after the disaster at Luna’s colony, Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia, and Jasper were forced to regroup back with their old crew at Arkadia—much to Clarke’s chagrin. But before they could leave, Roan (after saving Clarke’s life from a chipped soldier who’d been following her), stole the flame from her. Before he could get away with it to bring it back to Ontari, Bellamy got the jump on him and took it back. He also knocked him out and shot him in the arm, “to make sure he wasn’t chipped,” although we all know it was actually just revenge for stabbing him earlier this season. You can’t fault him for that!
They brought Roan back to Arkadia with them to use him to get into Polis and to Ontari, since they still needed a Nightblood to put the flame into. They managed to convince Roan that they needed to disconnect Ontari from ALIE before uploading ALIE 2 into her, but to do that they needed to abduct her from the middle of a city under ALIE’s complete control—not an easy task. But of course Roan wasn’t phased (because duh, that’s how you get to be the Ice Nation King). After hugs were exchanged all around, Team Polis Abduction suited up and headed out …but there was one small issue. ALIE was watching them the whole time. How did she get inside Arkadia?! Who was chipped?! This is not good, people.
Bellamy, Clarke, and Roan made it to the outskirts of Polis, but Clarke was forced to give Roan the flame to bait Ontari into coming out of the throne room. Since Clarke wouldn’t let the flame out of her sight—and she was the only one who knew the pass phrase to open it—she decided to go with Roan as his “prisoner.” She told Bellamy she didn’t trust Roan with her life, but she did trust him, since he’d be covering them the whole time. Let’s hope that that’s enough.
Meanwhile, back in Arkadia, Raven wanted to use a City of Light chip to hack back into ALIE’s code and kill it from their side. That gave Jasper and Monty the chance to finally hash out their issues, and Jasper even apologized for blaming him for what happened in Mount Weather. They even hugged it out and called each other “brother!” Man, that felt so good to watch.
But noooo! It was all fake! I should have known …there’s no such thing as “happiness” on this show. I was tricked, and I should have known better, guys. I take full responsibility for that. Turns out Jasper has been chipped this whole time. That’s how ALIE was able to see inside Arkadia earlier! How long has he been chipped? (My guess is since the attack on Luna’s colony.) When Monty found the motherboard Raven needed, Jasper stabbed him in the stomach and tried to steal it, but luckily Monty got away with it. He made it inside Raven’s office and locked the door, but they both realized Jasper already cut the communications so they couldn’t even warn Clarke and Bellamy that they were walking into a trap, since ALIE knew their entire plan. Uh oh.
Team Polis Abduction carried on, of course, not knowing their plan was doomed from the start. Roan even promised Clarke that when all this was over, Ontari would know the part Clarke played in helping her. Could there be an Ice Nation-Skaikru truce after all? (Doubt it.) In the tunnels, Bryan and Miller joked about a peaceful life and growing old together after all this fighting was over while Bellamy and Octavia listened with broken hearts. Their plan was to gas everyone while Clarke and Roan held their breath and got Ontari, but instead of Ontari coming out, Jaha greeted them. He told them “their friends in the tunnel” can’t help them, and demanded the flame while the tunnel crew was overtaken by chipped Grounders. Roan tried to save Clarke and told her to run, but Kane shot him before he could get away. No, not Roan! He’s not totally dead, right? He looked semi-alive when he was dragged away.
In Arkadia, Monty patched himself up as best as he could while Raven continued to work on hacking into ALIE’s code. Monty was worried about Harper being alone outside, not knowing Jasper was chipped. But Monty knew as long as Jasper was trying to get into the room, he wasn’t going after Harper. While Raven and Monty continued to work, Jasper listed all the dead at their hands. But distraction was no match for Raven’s determination, which helped her get back into ALIE’s code! Too bad Jasper knocked out Harper and used her to blackmail them to shut down the computer. One life is not worth the entire world’s, right?
Back in Polis, Jaha had Clarke brought up to the throne room, where she saw her mom in all her chipped glory, and they tried to get Clarke to reveal the flame’s pass phrase by any means necessary. Even having Abby herself do the torturing. Whoa. Hold up. This is just messed UP, y’all. (Just when I thought this show couldn’t get any darker!) Clarke withstood her mother’s bloody torture, until Abby told ALIE that her friends were her weakness—starting with Bellamy. But before the Grounders could take Bellamy up to the throne room for something that would definitely not turn out well, Murphy (! of all people) showed up to save the day with Indra and Pike. Hell yes! Although Octavia had a hard time agreeing to work with Pike and not put a bullet in his head, understandably so.
Murphy wanted to leave Polis ASAP, but Bellamy explained that they had to get up into the throne room to get the flame to destroy ALIE once and for all. Octavia stayed behind with Indra and Pike to work the elevator crank while Bellamy and Murphy went up to the throne room. Indra knew exactly why Octavia stayed behind: to get revenge on Pike. But Indra also knew that the dead can’t help them, so they needed him for now, especially since Kane came and shot Bryan. Indra knocked him out, while Murphy and Bellamy fought their way into the throne room. But more Grounders were coming!
I feel like this episode could be summed up as whatever could go wrong did go wrong. Since ALIE knew the Skaikru was almost to the throne room, she had to resort to desperate measures to get Clarke to tell her the pass phrase for the flame. So Jaha tied a noose in the throne room, and Abby put her own head into it. No! Egged on by ALIE, Abby stepped off the barrel and began to choke and die, while Clarke could only cry, “I’m so sorry,” while she watched in tears. Raise your hand if you had some tears of your own watching this scene?!
Down below, the Skaikru blew the tunnels, and Indra tried to shield Kane from the blast, knowing he wasn’t himself right now and didn’t deserve to die. ALIE, knowing the Skaikru was about to storm the throne room, made Jaha hit Ontari in the head to kill her, knowing that the Skaikru needed the Nightblood to use the flame against her. The damage to Ontari’s brain was substantial but she was still alive. Murphy and Bellamy arrived just in time to stop Jaha from fully killing her, cutting Abby down before she died as well. (That was close.) Bellamy got the flame from Jaha, but Ontari was brain dead before they could do anything or get the ALIE kill code from ALIE 2. They were now trapped in the throne room, with no plan for what to do next. I think this is what they call up shit creek without a paddle?
