One of the many, many things we love about this time of year is all the themed projects, videos and fan-builds that surface each honor of #StarWarsDay. Our collective cups runneth over with so much fun Star Wars related content that we hope someday we’ll see a #StarWarsWeek!
One of the latest Star Wars builds to come, quite literally, out of the woodwork is this Death Star replica recently shared by The Awesomer. It was expertly crafted by YouTube’s Frank Howarth whose channel is full of videos showcasing a level of woodworking skill that would make even Ron Swanson jealous.
The video follows its transformation from simple pieces of bamboo plywood to what has to be one of the most beautiful representations of the dreaded Imperial space station. The two segmented halves come apart at the trench and were made by joining concentric rings together each made from 13 segments.
What’s really beautiful about this is that the surface of the final product looks like the surface of the Death Star without any special texturing. The segments of each ring seem deliberately alternated in order to see the contrast in wood grain from piece to piece. And by letting the grain show it results in a pattern that looks just like a space station’s surface.
While we’d give our right hands to own this piece of Star-Warsian art, what we really love is the small flourishes of fandom throughout the video. Pretending pieces of the build were other ships, adding the blueprint graphics and even giving a nod to the many fallen Bothans who weren’t so lucky with the actual Death Star plans. As far as #StarWarsDay builds, the Fourth is strong with Frank Howarth.
What are your thoughts on this gorgeous centerpiece that we desperately hope is for sale? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
