As long as youâve seen this video, you know I love text-to-speech applications. If it was illegal to make your computer say a dirty word you typed, then weâd all be let out of prison due to capacity limitations. There is a unique joy in hearing the words âpoopy smudgeâ computer generated. It brings out the kid in you. Donât believe me? Try this. Highlight the following sentences and get speaking: âHey, you pile of boners. Listen to me already. When I close my eyes all I hear are the screams of thousands of children as their blood is drained into the in-ground pools of the rich.â Xtranormal.com has taken this idea a few steps further. Continue on for an explanation and demonstration.
You may be a bit familiar with xtranormal. Their site was used to make the now infamous iPhone vs HTC Evo video. The concept around xtranormal is simple yet ingenious: text-to-movie. Once youâve created an account you can choose from a variety of themes (called showpaks), locations, characters, and voices. Simply type something, and the character will animate and say it. Surprisingly, it sounds much more real than youâd think, but still hilariously bad. You even get to drag and drop little icons into your script to create motion, sound effects, and camera movement for that added touch. There are plenty of free options to choose from, but if you want a wider variety of selections, just pay by way of an xbox-live-esque points system.
The best part is you can create a series and even upload it to youtube. So Iâve created a little series called, âTerry.â It follows Terry through his days as an office worker that no one really cares about. Iâve embedded the first episode, âOffice Party,â above. To see the next (and better) episodes go to my youtube account. I plan on doing one every couple of days now, so subscribe to keep updated.
After youâre done paying attention to me, go to xtranormal and try this for yourself! Then share them with everyone here! Easy. Fun. Hilarious!
Follow me on twitter for jokes about stuff and whatever.
Help?
Lol
You can still use Xtranormal here.

Hi,
Xtranormal is no more. Our Plotagon text-2-movie is much easier to use and produces higher quality that Xtranormal. There is a free trial. The application costs a one time fee of 4,99 USD. Try it at http://www.plotagon.com!

I just discovered xtranormal last week (late in the game, I know). I created a humorous movie and posted it to my blog. I have to admit that the flick is pulling in a some new traffic, which is exciting for me since my blog is fairly new. I think if the content is interesting enough, you can very easily create something that catches everyone’s attention and markets your company/product/website very well, FOR FREE. In my case I’ve found that a good laugh goes a long way š
To see what I created go to: http://www.fergyville.com/2010/10/humor-water-cannon/
Great post btw š
Is there a business model in Xtranormals future?
Hilarious, Matt! Very strong showing out the gate there š
I actually just started working for the Xtranormal team. You can imagine the iPhone 4/Evo vid and a few other hits have made it an interesting Summer over here.
As you can see on the site now, we’re busy responding to all the newfound attention, but in the (very) near future, we’ll be rolling out quite a bit of new ish that’ll make things easier for everyone and turn the fun up to 11.
If you or any other nerdists want some tips (or hey, who knows – maybe even freebies?) on text-to-movie, just give us a shoutout somewhere and mention this article or something. We’re @xtranormal on Twitter and getting personal with emails to [email protected]
The team’s really pumped to see more and more peeps making their computers talk dirty (and, you know, sometimes productive stuff too). Great writeup, and can’t wait to see the next parts of the series.
Cheers,
Skyler (don’t call me Andy)

Wow, I haven’t been more disturbed about reading an e-mail from my mom, ever.
I’m going to need that dip recipe…
