It’s no secret that the Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Earth in Avengers: Infinity War, because our terrestrial superheroes are going to need all the help they can get against Thanos. But for Groot, the trip to our world will give him more than just another chance to save the universe.
While speaking to Yahoo! Movies, Terry Notary confirmed that he performed the motion capture for teenage Groot in Avengers: Infinity War. More intriguingly, Notary indicated that the young Groot will get a role model. “I am playing teenage Groot,” related Notary. “I canât say too much about him, but heâs coming of age, so youâll see the teenager find a mentor to look up to and to model himself after. The characterâs great, and the films are going to be great.”
But who could possibly make such a strong impression on Groot? If the end credits scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is any indication, teenage Groot’s probably not going to be looking up to any of the parental units on his team. We have a few possibilities in mind, but they involve spoilers from the Infinity War teaser that debuted at Comic-Con. Consider this your final warning before proceeding!
Thor
Fans who saw the Infinity War preview scenes know that Thor will be the first Avenger to meet the Guardians, after they find him floating in space. Given his early introduction to the team, perhaps teenage Groot gravitates towards the godly newcomer in their mix. Can’t you just picture Groot reshaping his hand to resemble Thor’s hammer? There was actually a Thor Groot in Marvel’s Secret Wars event, so we definitely can’t rule out the God of Thunder as a potential mentor for Groot.
Hulk
A fight between Groot and Hulk has been a MCU dream match since the first Guardians movie. But given teenage Groot’s more rebellious persona, he may find himself drawn to the Hulk’s casual approach to everything. The Hulk just doesn’t give a *bleep*, and that’s an attitude teenage Groot would surely admire and emulate.
Spider-Man
This one is a little out of left field, but Spider-Man could absolutely be Groot’s mentor. Spidey may or may not be an Avenger in the sequel, but he is clearly the youngest hero among his allies. From teenage Groot’s perspective, Spidey may seem like a cooler older brother. Somehow, we think that Peter Parker could roll with that. It would give him some practice mentoring a hero before Miles Morales is (hopefully!) introduced to the MCU.
