Tamagotchi is Coming to your Smartphone

For today’s kids, who have 24-hour internet access and unlimited games thanks to smartphones, Tamagotchi might seem like another strange relic of the ’90s. But modern youth will themselves now know the pleasures of carrying around a single tiny toy that required you to give constant attention to a virtual pet so it wouldn’t “die,” as those needy little creatures are getting a mobile game update!

Bandai Namco has announced the newest incarnation of their mega-popular Tamagotchi: an app for both Android and iOS operating systems. My Tamagotchi Forever will still need “your daily care to stay healthy and happy,” and that will mean keeping it “well fed, washed, and entertained,” but this time they’re a lot livelier and more colorful.

While this new version still primarily follows the original concept of raising your character from a tiny egg who evolves into other types of creatures across youth and adulthood, you can also “play mini games and explore Tamatown together, making friends with other Tamagotchi characters on the way.” The game will also allow you to share your favorite moments with friends, unlock food, costumes, and items to decorate Tamatown, and to compare your progress with other players.

Oh, yeah, and you still have to clean up all their crap. Seriously, that’s still a big part of the game. In fairness to today’s kids, that was really strange in the ’90s too. But we promise, you’re still gonna do it. If you think social media is hard, wait until you forget to feed your Tamagotchi for a whole weekend.

Are you excited to raise a Tamagotchi again? Do you think the game will prove popular with a new generation? Share your thoughts on virtual reality pet care with us in the comments below.
