When Marry Me, the new comedy from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, premiered on NBC last fall, it quickly became a die-hard fan favorite. The series blends a cast of incredible comedy talent led by Casey Wilson and Ken Marino and has a quick, quirky personality. Nerdist had the opportunity to visit the set of the NBC comedy and sit down with the cast, including Wilson, to discuss their awesome chemistry, Wilson’s role in front of and behind the camera, and the season one notable guest stars.
When Wilson signed on to Marry Me did she know that her co-star Ken Marino would be playing her soon-to-be TV husband? She revealed, “I didnât! I obviously wanted to do the show but very quickly his name came up and he was the only person they went out to and offered him the part and weirdly enough, I knew Ken but I had never worked with him. Well, I did, it was a voice over on Burning Love… So I was so happy to work with Ken and once we got him, itâs amazing to get someone who is handsome and I think really funny in our age range, thatâs a hard person to find.”
Wilson continues to sing her co-star’s praises. “Itâs so weird, sometimes I feel like things work and sometimes they just donât and we just kind of had a natural, nice chemistry right off the bat and we made love many times (laughs) and that helped! But so, we just really got along right away which is lucky which I think sometimes, you just never know how itâs going to go. I also have enjoyed, because my husband and I are huge fans of Ken because heâs always kind of playing like a douche bag or just a jerk, but to see him play a leading man which I actually think heâs so great at that⦠Itâs just nice to see people do different stuff.”
Wilson is known to be a woman who wears many hats in the comedy world. As a writer, producer, actor and comedian, does she ever wish she were more involved behind the scenes on Marry Me? “I honestly love just being an actress on this,” she says. “It feels kind of easy to show up and I write things with June Diane [Raphael], my best friend and writing partner, and weâre writing our own stuff for ourselves to be in together and so I sort of prefer, I just show up here and itâs a nice long day, I donât need to be running off. And I love the writers on this show. A lot of them are Happy Endings writers and a lot of them are from all over and weâve got so many talented women in the room and itâs a great mix of people in there so Iâm lazy and I donât want to help in any way.”
Marry Me has hosted many very funny guest stars from the comedy world like Rob Huebel, Jerry O’Connell, Michaela Watkins, Rob Riggle and Nia Vardalos. Are there any guest stars Wilson would like to have on the show? She says enthusiastically, “Weâve had such amazing ones, weâd love to get Catherine OâHara. Weâve been so lucky to get so many people from the comedy community. Paul Scheer I know weâre trying to get as a friend. Weâve gotten a lot, just this episode alone we got some of my great girlfriends like Jessica St. Clair, June Diane Raphael and Danielle Schneider and it was so fun having everyone so yeah, feeling pretty good!”
