SXSW Music Report: Snoop Dogg and Allen Hughes Developing Show for HBO

During his 2015 SXSW Keynote Speech, Snoop Dogg and his manager Ted Chung announced that they have a show in development with director Allen Hughes (Broken City) and writer Rodney Barnes (The Boondocks) for HBO. The as-yet unnamed show will take place in the ’70s and ’80s, highlighting what life was like for a family in Long Beach dealing with the cultural and economic ramifications of Reaganomics. Previously, Snoop (Calvin Broadus) has collaborated with Barnes on The Boondocks, providing the voice for rapper Macktastic.

Given HBO’s foray into music documentaries (Sonic Highways, George Harrison: Living In The Material World, and Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck), it should be interesting to see an original series where music is tangentially significant, rather than the strictly biographical epicenter.
