SUPERNATURAL Recap: Lucifer Has a New Body to Call Home

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Supernatural episode “Mamma Mia.” If you haven’t watched it yet, jump into the Impala and drive away.

It’s time for a complete Winchester family reunion, kids. Dean and Mary continued the search for Sam in “Mamma Mia,” and as they did, we learned more (thankfully) about the UK Men of Letters. Outside of Winchester-ville, Lucifer stopped burning through vessels and found a new rocking home. Let’s discuss.

Mary Winchester is an absolute delight. Her presence not only adds to the diversity of the series, it also brings a new dynamic to how the brothers operate. It’s all new and weird—Dean lives in a world where he’s used to seeing people come back from the dead, but those people aren’t his mom. He’s usually completely together, so it was adorable to see him talk to Castiel about how to handle his mother. And in typical Dean fashion, he told her he was “so happy I can’t stand it” without changing his expression even a little. It was perfect.

He, of course, tried to be overprotective of Mary, but she wouldn’t have it. She was a hunter long before Dean and being in the grave for decades doesn’t mean her skills have atrophied. With Sam’s life in danger, she wasn’t about to sit back and let Dean take care of everything. She pushed back against him, and oh my goodness has Dean needed someone around who takes a firm hand with him (and maybe sometimes to him). I can definitely see similarities between the two.

They worked well together as they busted into the spot where Sam was held. There, Toni continued to apply extreme measures to Sam to get him to talk. Her actions became trite by the end of the episode (she looked at sharp things dramatically way too often), but initially, her use of spells, potions, and archaic-looking weaponry expanded the picture of the UK Men of Letters. She’s been thoroughly trained on the academic and practical sides, and as she haughtily referenced some of the high standards of her branch of the Men of Letters, I couldn’t help but picture a Hogwarts-esque school where they all train. Given what we saw of her knowledge, it seems like she started young. Is it a Red Room situation or something more voluntary?

Until her calmer counterpart showed up, Toni’s actions didn’t make much sense. Torturing Sam and then the freshly caught Dean to get answers about American hunters was the least sensible tactic to use in order to get them to trust her. We learned from Mick the whole trust thing was their objective. Toni went in the, shall we say, fanatical, direction with the mission. Mick called her out on it too and promised the Winchesters Toni would be handled.

I was concerned his arrival would be the end of the UK Men of Letters, but happily that was not the case. They’re concerned about the supernatural threat in the United States. You can’t blame them. They have a more rigid and functional system in place, so there’s motivation for them to want to come to America and clean up shop. Their approach needs polish, but I still think they have extreme measures in mind.

Once he was safe from danger, Sam started to process the return of Mary. He was a baby when she was killed, so their reunion was a big deal. Not everything is perfect. It shouldn’t be. But, we did see a warm and fuzzy family moment. By god, we’ve earned a few lighthearted scenes of the Winchesters sitting down with Mary at the table and Dean shoving pie in his face. So. Satisfying.

The Winchesters weren’t the only family members in the episode. Crowley managed to rope Rowena back into the mix by having her locate Lucifer. The devil found a new body to call home with rock star Vince Vincente, played by Rick Springfield. He’s not Mark Pellegrino, but I guess the contrast is sort of the point. This is a different devil than we’ve seen. He’s still power hungry and ready to rule hell, but the maniacal edge we’re used to isn’t quite there. I do think a rock star is an ideal vessel for the character though, so I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

What did you think of Lucifer’s new skin? How about the Winchesters’ first family meal together? Tell me in the comments.
