After the Super Mario games for the Wii and Wii U, fans were understandably curious to see if Super Mario Odyssey could continue the tradition of innovative new abilities and gameplay. Judging by the latest trailer to debut at E3, Nintendo has met those expectations and more. And we can’t wait to try out Mario’s ability to become some of his greatest enemies!
In the wild new footage from Nintendo’s E3 presentation, Super Mario Odyssey demonstrates that Mario’s magic hat, Cappy, will be more than just an offensive weapon. By throwing the hat on to his enemies, Mario appears to be able to possess their bodies. And he can use that trick on almost anything or anyone, including a dinosaur, a Taxi cab, Goombas, Bullet Bills, and even one of the humans walking around in New Donk City. Fittingly, Mario’s signature mustache appears on the faces of his new forms; which makes for some really hilarious visuals.
Of course, the plot of the game is pretty standard for the Super Mario series. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach (again), although he seems to be much further along in his plans to marry her this time. Amusingly, Peach even has Piranha Plants as her wedding bouquet. According to Nintendo, one of Mario’s old flames is the mayor of New Donk City: Pauline from the original Donkey Kong! Could this mean that the big ape will also make an appearance? After all, that would be a fitting reunion of the three characters, especially if Donkey Kong goes King Kong in the New Donk City world.
Super Mario Odyssey will be released on October 27 for the Nintendo Switch.
