SUPER MARIO 64 and BANJO-KAZOOIE Have Been Mashed Together in New Mod

Two decades ago, the Nintendo 64 redefined 3D platform games with the instant classic, Super Mario 64, and other excellent titles including Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie. And even though the console wars have long since moved on to more powerful systems, fans have continued to find new ways to enjoy the N64’s greatest titles–like this Super Mario twist on Goldeneye 007. Now, a new mod, Super Banjo-Kazooie 64, has mashed both games together and given us a glimpse of the Mario 64 sequel we should have gotten years ago.

Via Polygon, Super Banjo-Kazooie 64 was created by the modder known as Trenavix, in collaboration with Waschpenner and Shyguyhex. Together, they used the SM64Paint program to essentially transplant Mario and his enemies into the world of Banjo-Kazooie. They even included all of Mario’s signature moves. As a result, it looks and feels like Super Mario 64 2, as Mario seems right at home within the lush landscape created by Rare. The biggest difference between this and the original Mario 64 is that the Jiggy puzzle pieces from Banjo-Kazooie are collected in places of stars.

While we’d love to see Banjo and Kazooie invade Super Mario 64‘s levels as well, this mod is only a demo at the moment. Trenavix posted a playable version of his Super Banjo-Kazooie 64 mod here, in order to gauge whether the response merits the time and effort to complete the entire makeover. Hopefully that’s something that we will be able to play in the near future.
