Not all deathbed confessionals are a good idea. The revelation of long kept secrets can cause a grieving family even more stress, and they can totally upend lives and ruin relationships. And the trailer for the coming-of-age story Summer ’03 shows that deathbed advice can be just as destructive, especially when it’s something a dying grandma should probably not tell her teenage granddaughter.
The Conjuring‘s Joey King stars as Jamie, a 16-year-old “left to navigate her own love life and maintain her closest friendships in the midst of this family crisis” caused by her grandmother (June Squib), who unleashed a number of family secrets as she died. That also included some…uh…interesting insight for her young granddaughter. Grandma’s death and dying words lead Jamie down a turbulent path that leads her to trouble and church, but not to pray.
We hope parents who have young children who loved King in Netflix’s popular rom-com The Kissing Booth take our advice and make sure they watch this trailer before bringing their kids to see it. While many of its apparent themesâlike death, grief, friendship, family, relationships, and growing upâare timeless, some youngsters might not be ready to hear an old lady extol the virtues of getting good at oral sex.
Also starring Andrea Savage (Veep, Iâm Sorry), Paul Scheer (The League, The Disaster Artist), and Jack Kilmer (The Stanford Experiment), the movie marks the debut of director Becca Gleason who also wrote the script, which is inspired by true events. Summer ’03 comes to theaters on September 28.
