Stunning STAR WARS Planet Flags Inspired by the Expanded Universe

We love the new Star Wars universe that’s unfolding before our eyes. But there are some things we miss about the expansive non-canon universe from the films, comic books, animated series, and video games of Star Wars past.

Artist Scott Kelly (not the astronaut currently on board the ISS) has taken his love of traditional flag design and vexillology and combined it with the (mostly) non-canon Star Wars planets of the expanded universe to create this ongoing series, “Flags of the Galaxy.” Vexillology is a serious study delving into a flag’s rich symbolism and design. With the mix of bold colors and the carefully placed lines drawn across the horizon, 103 planets are represented here. And just like the actual flags used on our own planet, a lot of thought and attention to goes into creating each flag. Kelly plans to continue with the remaining lesser known planets, even though each flag takes him over an hour just to conceptualize.

Using Wookieepedia as a guide for some of the denser historic details about the planets, Kelly also includes a brief description of the planet’s timeline. This series is definitely one of the more immersive works of fan-art by a professional meant to delve deeper into the discarded but not forgotten lore of the expanded Star Wars lore.

You take a peek at some of the flags in our gallery below. And for an even better look at this series, we recommend viewing the official website complete with all 103 individual flag photos and bios, as well as a separate vexillology for a select few flags.

Which planet’s flag is your favorite? And which planet do you hope to see Scott Kelly design in the future? Let us know below, and may the force be with you!
