For its #ExperienceAmazing campaign, Intel’s goal is to “demonstrate how the brand has evolved beyond the perception of just being a chip manufacturer to one that creates ‘amazing human experiences.'” And its latest experience, a collaborative effort with famed digital artist and CGI innovator, Nobumichi Asai, is quite a stunner.

In the above video, entitled “Connected Colors,” Intel and Asai—who wowed us in 2014 with his “OMOTE” demonstration—create a vivid and fluid example of something called “projection mapping.” Also known as “video mapping,” or “spatial augmented reality,” projection mapping turns irregularly shaped objects into display surfaces for video. It usually works by scanning and plotting the contours of a 3D object that will be used as the projection surface (in this case, a face), and then using software to manipulate a moving image in order to fit it onto said 3D object.

Intel and Asai’s effort is even more impressive considering requires, on top of the projection mapping, something called “face tracking,” which, as the name implies, allows Asai to track faces in real-time and project his moving images.

Although projection mapping has already become popular—especially in large, public spaces like sports arenas, as well as on Lady Gaga’s face— with their “Connected Colors” video, Asai and studio WOW bring the artistry of the technology to the next level. And for the future, there’s no telling how many applications this technology may have, although for some reason, Mystique comes immediately to mind. Perhaps one day, we’ll be able to change the skin we’re in as easily as she does.
