Stranger Things season two is less than two months away, which means that we should have plenty of time to binge through the first season again. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer so perfectly captured the flavor of the early ’80s that the only thing missing from Stranger Things season one was an Atari 2600 tie-in game. But that hasn’t stopped Netflix from adding a little 8-bit flavor to its latest Stranger Things promo video…
In this charming shortcut through the entire first season, the journey of Mike, Dustin, and Lucas is depicted as a game that would have felt right at home on the original NES. The early levels of the video feature the boys encountering Eleven for the first time, and then trying to hide her from Mike’s parents while keeping her Eggo level high. You can’t actually play it like a game, and yet it’s still more enjoyable than that ET video game.
The later “levels” significantly up the stakes, as Eleven goes from protecting Mike in school to taking on the organization that experimented on her. It’s almost like a Choose Your Own Adventure story when Eleven is given the option to attack or surrender… but we already know that surrender just isn’t in her nature.
The only downside: we have to experience poor Barb getting stuck in the Upside Down again. #JusticeForBarb
Stranger Things season two will premiere on Netflix on Friday, October 27.
